Throw A Winter Baked Potato Game Night

After all the Christmas cookies, roasts and buttered everything, January is a good time to get back to basics in the kitchen. Crockpot casseroles, simple coffee cakes and baked potatoes are good wholesome fare. Actually, baked potatoes might be a good simple dish to build a dinner party around… or maybe just an easy going game night.

A baked potato buffet is a simple, affordable menu that suits all tastes – a bag of russets and half a dozen toppings are all you need. Good topping options are –

– fresh chopped chives

– crumbled bacon

– herbs de provence (or your favorite herb mix) with melted butter

– sour cream

– shredded cheese

– sun dried or chardonnay marinated tomatoes

– chopped olives

– cracked pepper and sea salt

– sliced green onions

– roasted red peppers

Serve toast or garlic bread alongside, as well as a bottle of two of white wine and a selection of your favorite beer.

Baked potatoes are a good party food, so plan a food-themed activity – there are some great food-themed games out there, one of my favorites being Foodie Fight. If you’ve got more than six people at your gathering, you can play the game in teams, which makes it even more interesting. Put a bottle of wine, a six pack of beer, or another copy of the game up as a prize the winner.
